I have developed a distaste for selfies, at least the narcissist ones. It's so easy to spot them. It's easy to smell narcissism across the computer screen. Ah, Facebook & Instagram, what breeding grounds!
Yes, this rant may seem like a hypocrisy, but let me explain. It's true I've kept a personal website for more than a decade! And it's true I've been a blogger for years! And the subject is... well... I!
Then comes Facebook (Friendster prior to that). Now I can tell the difference. My maintenance of personal websites was really not for self-promotion (most of the time), they were [cyber]spaces to let bouts of creativity (or, semblance of) flow out. Although I have to admit, the subject of that is ME isn't very creative. But I get to write without chopping down trees! And without cluttering my house with embarrassing diaries. It just so happened that "I" was a subject that I know best! And there's something cool about building up a webpage out of HTML codes from scratch! (The majority of the people lingering in FB can't do that!) And, design! Even if I'm not confident with my artistic skills... I do have an eye for artsy beauty! And with a webpage, I get to play with some design. It's just my attempt at that... writing & designing.
When I expose myself in FB, it's usually to update family & friends. And to share some advocacies & interests. I believe my FB profile does not scream "look at me! look at me!" Except for the tags by other people, I'm really private about most of my details (esp. about my family). Because there is nothing very creative about filling up a spy's database form.
